Exclusivity @ the St. Regis Spa and Health Club

2055 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles (310) 407-8258 www.stregis.com

We’re told there is only place on this planet where you can be treated to the Sjal (shaal) facial – at the St. Regis spa tucked away in Century City .

Located on the 5th level, the discreet spa and health club which boasts vistas of the city and a patch of the Pacific, dances to slow classical music and offers recluse and reprieve to those of us who don’t like patronizing crowded spas that are in-your-face, may promise rejuvenation but only make you feel like you’ve been pushed through a conveyer belt.

Inside this sanctuary dressed in white marble, light woods and shabby chic, you will find the essential and commonly overlooked components of a getaway – space and solitude.  Perhaps by resisting the urge to overbook and consideration on part of the management, you can enjoy the luxury of sipping tea in the waiting room, dissolve in the outdoor pool and hot tub, or detoxify in the eucalyptus steam room without having to dodge a dozen eyes and miraculously feel as if you were in your own private spa.

The one-of-a-kind Sjal facial, administered in one of the eight treatment rooms, employs exclusive products from the Swedish-inspired line of its namesake and uses natural plant-based ingredients and up to 45 vitamins.  A multi-step process, it incorporates 4 defined steps that help to exfoliate the skin, oxygenate it, and provide nutrition. It begins with a special hydrating treatment for the skin with a magnetized, copper and germanium water.

This is followed by a luxurious honey and orange mask, loaded with antioxidants and essential oils, and which help to cleanse the skin.  A seaweed and algae oil and French clay purification/firming mask are next.  To remove dead skin and further oxygenate it, a mild citric peel is applied. The treatment is concluded by applying Kura crème, considered priceless for its ability to catalyze collagen and popular in the pre-surgery stage for face-lifts. The results are immediate and the rosy glow lasts for a few days.

The spa also provides a powerful Raindrop Therapy that combines aromatherapy as an essential part of its healing and restorative properties.  Aimed at promoting vitality and rejuvenation of the immune system, this treatment disperses organic essential oils like raindrops along the spine.  By incorporating gentle stretches and a warm compress along the spine, a sense of physical and emotional well-being is achieved.

For those in the mood for a workout, the fitness center is a state-of-the-art, fully equipped facility with a circuit of Cybex machines, treadmills and elliptical trainers available 24-hours a day.  The hotel’s grand aesthetic is pulled into the fitness center with floor to the ceiling windows that overlook the pool area so that you can sweat, sip cucumber water, and literally be on top of the world.

Ole Henriksen's Escape To Tranquility

Celebs like Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell routinely drop by to pay homage to this legendary guru that has appeared on shows like Oprah and Entertainment Tonight.

His "escape to tranquillity" spa, tucked away discreetly in the Sunset Plaza, is a Zen-like space where the pampering begins in sunken Japanese-style tubs filled with relaxing soaks ranging from "Muscle Comfort Soak" to "Vitamin Citrus Soak," and set against an earthy slate wall mounted with twenty-one dancing candles.  Since there are two tubs, you can share this treatment with that someone special.

From here, you amble along past sleek shoji-screened walls to the serenity of a private room for an invigorating 6-step body treatment that includes an herbal body wash, lavender sea salt scrub, body mask (mud or seaweed), tropical rain rinse, aromatic scalp treatment with cranial massage and hand and foot reflexology ($135).

Of the various massage therapies available, the 1hr 15 min Hot Stone Massage Therapy ($120), which to many seems like a new fad but has in fact been around for centuries, is a divine experience.  Administered by Michael, the treatment uses fifty-two warm Basalt stones that are placed strategically on the body and emit a healing heat.

Top it all off with a custom-designed facial ($95) that will leave no tell-tale signs and a glow that will confirm why Ole Henriksen is considered the angel from skin-care heaven and the guardian of celebrity visages.
