Keeping it cool with Uma

The ever-versatile Uma Thurman has played a variety of compelling characters ranging from corseted dames in Merchant Ivory’s The Golden Bowl to a bloody, kick-ass avenger in Tarantino’s Kill Bill volumes, but the most memorable of her roles may just be her ultra-cool dance with Travolta in Pulp Fiction, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award.

Get ready for the sexy pair to deliver another magical moment as they gyrate around the dance floor to the Black Eyed Peas playing Sexy in the background.  In the aptly titled Be Cool, Thurman is back with Travolta as Edie Athens.

“I found the script incredibly funny and enjoyable,” she says, “but the main initial hook was to team up with John again.  We had such a great time 10 years ago, and when I read through the dance scene I felt like I’d been there before.  And to dance with John Travolta is just so much fun!  He makes it so easy.  He’s just so passionate and he had so much fun dancing that even though I was shyer and a lot less confident, it really let me go and just have the time of my life.”

Based on the Elmore Leonard novel, Get Shorty introduced a hip new kind of gangster, revising pre-existing stereotypes.  There are many extraordinary moments in a Leonard novel but perhaps the most enjoyable aspect is the cast of characters he creates, always pushing the edge of the envelope.  In Be Cool, as Chili moves from one side to the other, Thurman plays a sexy Angeleno with a top-notch tan, great style and a failing indie record label.  Joining her are also The Rock, Vice Vaughn, Harvey Keitel and Danny DeVito, who co-produces the film.  “What Elmore Leonard is famous for,” says Thurman, “are his bold characters and incredibly sharp dialogue…It’s colorful and bold and gives each actor something really unique to do.”

Travolta was equally thrilled that Thurman had accepted the role but is quick to point out that it’s far from some rehash.  “Uma and I are very comfortable together on screen and in Be Cool we’re playing very different characters than we played in Pulp Fiction.  In Pulp Fiction we were basically playing two people that were hell-bent for death, and in Be Cool we’re playing two people that are cool and rugged, cool-bent for life.”

JW Marriott Bombay’s best

P.O. Box 8283, Juhu Tara Road, Mumbai 400 049 India +91 22 693 3000 mail@jwmarriottmumbai.com About $199-$300

Bombay is home not only to India’s Hollywood, aka BOLLYWOOD, but is home also to some of the finest luxury hotels in the world.  A shopper’s paradise where one can enjoy culture, indulge in exhilarating city life, centered around the friendliest, most hospitable people. Bombay is an essential destination for any world traveler open to adventure and to being irrevocably changed.  When making your trek there, you must add the JW Marriott as an integral part of your experience.

Nestled in the exclusive beach community of Juhu, the breathtaking resort is impressive from its very first sighting as it towers over the suburban city.  Conveniently located about twenty minutes from the airport, the JW fuses modern and traditional elements in its luxurious design.  It incorporates voluptuous Rajasthani sandstone sculptures, Thai pagodas, blooming lotus ponds and verdant landscaping as part of its design.

One is tempted to almost never leave this palatial resort that also domiciles several of the finest restaurants.  There is Saffron – an Indian restaurant that recreates the cuisine of the 19th century royal kitchens of Hyderabad and Awadh; Spices – featuring chefs from Thailand and Japan serving off of the teppan grill; Mezzo Mezzo – where authentic Italian cuisine delivers hand-stretched pizzas and homemade pastas; and the ever-bustling Lotus Café, the 24-hour central eatery where, on Sundays, it is nearly impossible to get a reservation for their sumptuous brunch, and which, on Friday and Saturday nights, is the essential stop for partygoers at the celebrity-studded, resident nightclub, Enigma.

A fully equipped health club and spa offers personal trainers, multiple swimming pools including an infinity view, beauty services and even Botox!  Businessmen will be delighted to know that a 24-Hour Business Center provides secretarial and high speed internet services, plush meeting rooms, offices and up-to-date technology and accessories.  Each of the 358 rooms, 43 of which are suites, includes high-speed internet access as well.  For those who were wise enough not to saddle themselves with a laptop, you can grab a steaming cup of spiced chai, the most delectable homemade cookies and book time on the computer at the BCC bookstore cum coffeehouse downstairs (also a fabulous place to sight Bollywood celebrities).

Once you’ve stayed at the JW Marriott, it is impossible to entertain the thought of staying anywhere else in Bombay.  Although about an hour away from South Bombay, where you will find landmarks like the Gateway of India, you can rent a taxi for the full day for the equivalent of about $30 and be relieved to leave the bustle of the city behind at the end of the day.  Plus, Juhu is located near Bandra, the celebrated shopping area which is bound to elicit repeat visits.

Long after you’ve returned to your world, the memory of sipping gin and tonics as you stand between the fiery columns by the infinity pool and watch the gigantic sunset over the Arabian Ocean, will remain with you forever.
